Can a muffler increase horsepower?

A custom aftermarket muffler can be an effective way of increasing torque and horsepower, although the impact is variable. By replacing your capback exhaust with a new exhaust system you can significantly increase both the horsepower and torque.

Many exhaust systems have restricted airflow. While there are benefits to this, it’s not the best way to get maximum performance from any vehicle. By increasing the airflow in the exhaust system, you can successfully improve the performance of your car, truck or SUV and increase its horsepower.

Both MagnaFlow Exhaust Systems and the Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust System are ideal for improving vehicle performance, with the Flowmaster being best suited for trucks and SUVs. Either option can increase horsepower by around 5-10%, so there are big gains to be made by choosing the right exhaust configuration.

Similarly, the Heartthrob Exhaust System, PaceSetter Monza Exhaust System, and the JBA Performance Exhaust System can enhance both torque and horsepower. Offering dyno-proven horsepower gains, the Skunk2 Megapower Exhaust System is ideal for Japanese vehicles, such as Honda, Toyota, and Nissan.

For ultimate power, however, Gibson Exhaust System is certainly worth considering. Offering up to 20 extra horsepower and 20-foot pounds of torque, you can improve the performance of your vehicle considerably simply by switching out your OEM exhaust system for Gibson’s aftermarket alternative.

Will a new exhaust configuration improve fuel economy?

Your exhaust system has a significant role in the vehicle’s fuel economy, so switching it for a different model can successfully improve your car’s fuel usage. However, it’s important to note that not all exhaust or muffler systems are designed to improve fuel economy. Whilst there are plenty of systems that can help to reduce your gas expenditure, some exhaust systems may actually increase the amount of fuel used.

If you want to improve fuel economy by installing a new muffler, be sure to discuss this with our experienced technicians. There are systems, such as the JBA Performance Exhaust System, which will enhance fuel economy and increase torque and horsepower, so it’s possible to boost performance and fuel economy at the same time.

Similarly, the Corsa Exhaust System can be a great option if you want to alter your vehicle’s current fuel usage. Compatible with almost all vehicles, you can take advantage of Xtreme, Sport, and Touring options to make your vehicle more economical than ever.

Of course, if you’re noticing that your vehicle uses more gas than it used to, there are other things to consider before reconfiguring your entire exhaust system. High levels of fuel consumption can be caused by faulty spark plugs, incorrect tire pressure or poor oxygen filters. Before making any changes to your exhaust system, our technicians can examine your vehicle to determine whether increased gas consumption could have an alternative cause.

Once everything else has been ruled out, we can help to devise an appropriate exhaust system for your vehicle. Whether you want to maximize power as much as possible, make your vehicle more economical or opt for better performance and better fuel economy, we’ll find the best way to do it.

As well as installing new mufflers and exhaust systems, we can also create a custom configuration for your vehicle. Whether you’re driving a diesel or gas vehicle, a truck or a car, a compact vehicle or an SUV; our specialist custom exhaust systems can provide the ultimate performance boost.

With a custom-made Borla Exhaust System, for example, you can get sufficient gains when it comes to torque and horsepower, as well as reducing gas usage. As well as assessing your vehicle, we’ll also take your driving habits into account when we’re creating a custom exhaust system for you.

If you routinely drive for long distances, for example, your vehicle will use fuel differently than if you only usually take short trips. By combining our expert knowledge with your usage and your vehicle, we’ll create and install the perfect aftermarket exhaust upgrade for your vehicle.

When should you replace a catalytic converter?

Although catalytic converters are mandatory, they tend to impede performance due to the restrictions they place on airflow in the exhaust system. If your catalytic converter is faulty, it will need to be repaired or replaced in order for your vehicle to be considered roadworthy. A faulty cat converter is likely to increase your vehicle’s emissions, which means you could fail smog checks.

However, replacing a functional catalytic converter for an alternative could be an effective way of enhancing performance too. With a range of options available, technicians can upgrade your cat converter as part of an exhaust system overhaul or simply isolate and install new catalytic converters if the existing one is damaged or faulty.

Furthermore, our wide range of automotive services ensures we can conduct a range of diagnostic testing, repairs, and upgrades. If you want to enhance your performance by upgrading your muffler system and improving the vehicle’s suspension, for example, our experienced technicians can manage the project on-site.

Whilst enhancing your vehicle can be exciting and rewarding, it’s important to make the right choice when it comes to parts and components. Some muffler systems are only suitable for a diesel truck exhaust, for example, whilst others are best suited to cars or SUVs.
